Summary

It’s so important for new adopters to understand that putting unrealistic expectations on a new rabbit can and will result in disappointment.

Rabbits are instinctively prey animals (yes even domestics) and they need time to decompress in a new environment. The new sights, smells and sounds can be overwhelming and somewhat frightening. Imagine, if you will, being dropped off at a complete strangers home and expected to adapt and conform to the environment and other people immediately….

Give your new family member a minimum of 3 to 5 days to simply adjust before you begin socializing. Follow their lead and don’t force a snuggle session or head pets until they’ve had time to acclimate to what is essentially a whole new unfamiliar world.

    • Most importantly, provide them with a hidey box and please do not assume by forcing them to stay exposed it will help them adjust more quickly….. let them hide (it’s an instinctive need) and come out on their terms.

Create a feeding and treat schedule that’s consistent and typically they will learn to trust that you are the good guys and not a threat. And also understand that their back story plays a huge part in the time that they will need to adjust.

Don’t give up! Trust is earned and when it’s established it’s a beautiful coexistence!
